FIRST-EVER MAZEL DAY SCHOOL SHABBATON RECAP

Hello All,

As you may have heard, we had an amazing time on our Shabbaton in Staten Island last week! We started with Sushi lunch in Brooklyn and bowling in Staten Island. Shabbos was off to a great start as the boys ate out with the wonderful families in our community. It was followed by an incredible Oneg (all the boys responded positively in the survey), with a special story-teller Rabbi Y.Greenfield, delicious snacks, words of inspiration and song.
The next day, the boys enjoyed a packed schedule: breakfast, davening, a Torah Class with Mr. Berlin, lunch at Mr. Berlin's house, downtime to play backgammon, as well as a delicious Shalosh Seudos meal. Before Shabbos was over, the boys had the honor to meet Rav Reuven Feinstein, head of the Staten Island Yeshivah, who gave them blessings and shared thoughts on life.
The Shabbaton concluded with a game of basketball Saturday night, followed by Pizza and an Kumzits (Guitar and Lights) Concert with our very own Rabbi Warsh. A special thanks to Rabbi Warsh for taking the boys home.

Below please find pictures of all non-Shabbos activities:

Social Studies

Dear Parents,

We have been looking at the concept of Federalism, and how it was tested through the first years of America's history. Particularly, we have focused on the system of slavery and how it was to become the ultimate test of Federalism.

After looking at various primary documents that attempted to justify the system of slavery economically, socially, politically an religiously, we discussed how this propaganda was used in order to ensure that slavery was completely entrenched in American life.

We then used the techniques seen to create our own counter propaganda.

There is a test coming up next week, try the links below for practice quizzes or ideas

Math Class

The 8th grade students really impressed me how fast they learned all the rules of exponents. They were able to master the Powers of Products, Powers of Quotients, Powers of Powers, Products of Powers and Quotient of Powers Rules ! And when I gave them examples combining all of these rules they were able to do  them beautifully!
We ended our week with a Readers Theater about exponents that we "performed" to Mr. Berlin. It was a humorous way to review the rules, and everyone enjoyed!!
I am confident that all the students are going to do well on the Test.

SOCIAL STUDIES

Dear Parents,

As we come to the end of out first month of school, we can look back with pride at how much we have accomplished in Social Studies.

After our introductory look at the geography of the world, focusing on prominent countries in every continent, as well as the phyiscal highlights of Europe, we are ready to look at America's role in the world.
We are starting our unit looking at how America went from being a newly formed, small country, to become a world power as we know it today.

Our class discussions span the world of poitics, economics, current events and sociology, creating fascinating and thought provoking ideas.

Wishing you all an easy fast, and a wonderful year

Mrs. Raskin

Student Government and Mazel Times Roles 2014-15

Below are the Student Government and Mazel Times Roles 2014-15:

President – Daniel G.
The President leads the SGA (Student Government Association) meetings. The President must represent the student body and with the advice of Mr. Berlin and/or Mrs. Raskin make decisions on SGA matters. The president must create an agenda before each meeting. The president must break all tied votes in meetings. The President also will meet with Morah Chani and/or Mrs. Dahan for 15 minutes monthly to present school-related issues. The President is excused to do SGA work one class per week with expressed permission from Mr. Berlin or Mrs. Raskin.
Vice-President – Lauren B.      The Vice-President opens discussions/conversations at meetings that come up during the week. The Vice-President must also represent the President when he is absent. The Vice-President must work with the Secretary to take attendance at Gov’t/Mazel Times class. The Vice-President will work with the SGA Quality Control to make sure all middle school procedures are fair and operational. The VP accompanies the President to meeting(s) with administration where she takes notes and offers testimony. The VP also co-ordinates the work with any committees.
Secretary/Treasurer – Avi Baez
The Secretary must take efficient notes during all SGA meetings. The secretary must also write the minutes of all meetings of the SGA. The Secretary must work with the Vice-President to take attendance and report attendance issues to the SGA President. The secretary acts as liaison to the Mazel Times, passing on any information that the SGA wishes to be included in the upcoming edition. The Treasurer's job is to find ways to allocate funds for middle school activities and trips as well as publicize Mazel's mission in our communities.
Quality Control -- Daniel K.
Quality Control’s position requires him to be observant and take note in any lapses/errors when it comes to school functions (cold lunch, late dismissal, dirty floors). QC’s responsibility is to write down the pressing issue(s) and share it with the SGA at the weekly meeting. QC should also work with Survey Coordinator to make sure that appropriate attention is given to the results of a given poll. QC interacts with students as well as clears out the suggestion box, sifting through important and irrelevant issues. Over all, QC is the person overseeing the details that make our school.
Editor-In-Chief – Michelle K.
The EIC is the main decision-maker regarding what articles go into the newspaper and what is left out. She is required to lead “Mazel Times” meetings together with either Mrs. Raskin or Mr. Berlin. Any ideas for new articles should be addressed to the EIC. The EIC must also answer questions and complaints from readers as well as take responsibility for issues after publication (she needs to look over the paper CAREFULLY before it goes to print to maximize satisfaction). The EIC also writes a welcome message every issue that introduces new features and writers. Together with the Design Manager the EIC is responsible for final layout and appearance.
Assistant Editor-In-Chief – Eliezer A.
The AEIC is responsible to go over every submitted article to cross-check facts, spelling, grammar, writing style, page design, and photos. He needs to reject writing that appears to be plagiarized, published elsewhere, or of little interest to readers. He is also liable to add contributing editorial pieces, as well as motivating and developing editorial staff. The AEIC will also help the EIC make content decisions for the newspaper.
Photographer – Valerie U.
The photographer needs to spend a few minutes every few days taking pictures of school functions (classes, recesses, enrichment activities, e.t.c). She also needs to be actively snapping pictures of class/school trips as well as writing captions for them. The photographer may need to take photos to fit into specific articles as decided by the editors. The EIC and AEIC will direct and edit which pictures to use for MT.

Interviewer – Miriam Golda K.
The interviewer is called upon to conduct two interviews every issue, one with a teacher/administration and one with a fellow student. She is required to come up with 10 original and 5 follow-up questions per interview. The EIC and AEIC reserve the right to edit questions out and suggest more follow-up questions.
Design Manager and Cartoonist – Noah N.
The Design Manager is responsible to produce the layout, font, graphics, color and all other artistic areas of the paper. He is empowered with the task of setting the order in which articles appear and how they appear, where pictures are placed. The EIC can make slight changes to those ideas with Mr. Berlin and/or Mrs. Raskin’s consent. He is also asked to come up with a monthly cartoon or two that is school-appropriate and humorous, insightful, or both.
Survey Coordinator – Shaul N.
The task of the survey coordinator is to come up with and administer bi-weekly surveys to the middle school on an array of topics and issues. SC should work closely with QC on these matters and report survey results in SGA meetings and/or MT issues.
Holiday/RC Committee Director – Rochel A.
The HRC Director is responsible for organizing a middle school wide treat for every upcoming holiday and Rosh Chodesh. A budget for this will be discussed by the president with the Principal. The HRC director must come up with the idea, head the committee to create/buy/put together the activity, and distribute it in a fun and meaningful manner.
Assistant Holiday/RC Committee Director – Chana R.
The assistant HRC is responsible for putting together a committee of workers (perhaps from 6th Grade), as well as working with the HRC director to come up with the ideas and implementation.
